PSA gem rate, and why scarcity follows from it

The gem rate is the single most durable number in graded Pokemon cards. It tells you how quickly the PSA 10 supply of a card can grow — and supply growth, not hype, is what eventually decides whether a top-grade card holds its value.

What a gem rate actually is

A card’s PSA gem rate is the share of all its graded submissions that came back a PSA 10:

gem rate = PSA 10 population ÷ total graded population × 100

Both figures come from PSA’s public population report for the exact card and version. If 4,000 copies have been graded and 600 are PSA 10s, the gem rate is 15%. Nothing is modelled — it is a count divided by a count, updated as PSA grades more copies.

Why a low gem rate creates structural scarcity

Think of the gem rate as the yield of a factory. At a 12% gem rate, roughly eight raw copies have to be submitted to manufacture one new PSA 10. At a 70% gem rate, three submissions produce two. Same collector demand, wildly different rate of new supply.

That is why this is a structural edge rather than a narrative one. Hype fades, characters go in and out of fashion, sets get reprinted — but the physical reasons a card grades badly (centering, print lines, holo scratching, edge wear on a dark border) do not change. A card that has been hard to grade for five years will still be hard to grade next year, and its top-grade float stays tight.

Gem rate alone is not the trade

A low gem rate on a card nobody grades is meaningless. We pair it with a graded population of at least 50 copies, so there is an honest market rather than three sales inventing a price, and with recorded PSA 10 sales volume so a position can actually be exited. High population and low gem rate is the combination that matters: plenty of people have tried, and few succeeded.
